The cricket world is once again divided over the future of One Day Internationals. As domestic T20 leagues take up greater chunks of the yearly calendar, bilateral ODI series are increasingly viewed as scheduling burdens.
Prominent players have voiced concerns that the middle overs of ODIs lack the action of T20s and the intense tactical battles of Test matches. Some have proposed reducing the format to 40 overs per side, while others suggest limiting bilateral ODIs to ICC tournament qualification matches only.
However, advocates point out that the 50-over World Cup remains the most coveted trophy in international cricket. Finding a sustainable middle ground will be one of the ICC's biggest challenges in the coming decade.
